Research & Development
3 Sigma is large enough to handle major projects and volume requirements, yet small enough to be nimble and responsive. With over 35 years in business and a combined 250 years’ experience from our technical and manufacturing staff, our team is able to provide you with the innovation and developmental expertise you need.
An Investment In You
Our research and development staff has a diverse background in coating and adhesive product and process development. Their wealth of experience has helped 3 Sigma develop a unique and collaborative approach to product development, which ensures goal alignment and a superior experience for our customers.
3 Sigma’s solvent, emulsion and hot melt chemistry and manufacturing capabilities are utilized every day to create innovative more profitable products for our customers, helping them to capture additional market opportunities, reduce waste and production costs and increase output.
Building Blocks of Adhesive Design
The design here illustrates our approach for designing and developing unique, differentiated and higher margin products for our customers. Our unique “building blocks” approach for adhesives, developed and refined since the 1980s, has helped us build our reputation as a premier provider of specialty adhesives and coated materials.

Gravure coater. In direct gravure coating, an engraved roll is used to control the amount of coating that is delivered to the web. This engraved roll (often referred to as the gravure or applicator roll) typically features a steel or ceramic surface into which a cell pattern is engraved.

3 Sigma is one of the few companies that offer three major types of adhesives (or coatings) allowing us to provide a wider range of modifications for our customers.
Adhesive Type: Hot-Melt
- 20-inch Max Web Width
- Pattern Coating Capabilities (Tolerance of +/- 1/8 inch)
Adhesive Type: Emulsion
- 80-inch Max Web Width
- Pattern Coating Capabilities (Tolerance of +/- 1/8 inch)
Adhesive Type: Solvent
- 65-inch Max Web Width
- Pattern Coating Capabilities (Tolerance of +/- 1/8 Inch)
Our formulations allow for flexibility and ease-of-use for all customers.
- for long-term adhesion of critical product identification or information
- for temporary adhesion requiring clean peel-off with no residue
- for either frequent peel-off and re-stick or protection of sensitive, delicate substrates
Custom Product Development
It’s the phrase that defines 3 Sigma. The vast majority of what we manufacture is custom. We understand that there isn’t a “one size fits all” approach to adhesives, which is why we work with our customers and their end-users to analyze an application, look at the requirements and the operating environment, and then design a product that will perform optimally in those conditions. If it requires a new or “non-standard” face-stock, a special release liner, or even a uniquely formulated adhesive, that’s what we’ll make.
Partnering with our clients is what drives our products from being “good” to “great.”
Through our engagement process we begin to gain a deep understanding of our customer’s converting processes, which allows us to avoid any issues with print quality, die cutting, matrix stripping and label or product application methods.
We experiment with new materials, develop new processes, modify equipment and adhesives or top coats to help our customers achieve their goals.
Pilot or Ramp-Up Projects
3 Sigma has a “yes, we can” attitude and a wide range of web capabilities to fit your project.
3 Sigma has 12 production lines covering a wide range of capabilities – 3” – 80” web widths and multiple adhesive technologies and coating technologies to process those materials. Our wide range of capabilities allows us to generate one of the most diversified arrays of solutions in the coating/laminating industry.
When asked if we have a pilot coating capability, we respond “yes, we have 12”. Our philosophy at 3 Sigma is that each of our equipment pieces will function for plot and start-up production straight through high volume, on repeat runs. This allows us to shorten the production cycle and have the highest degree of consistency and reliability with our pilot and production materials.
Improving Your Products
3 Sigma is known for solving complex product requirements. When working with 3 Sigma, you can be assured that we strive to:
Value Added Toll Coating
We strive to be as accommodating as possible for our customers and clients and will work with you to develop the optimal commercial relationship that meets your needs.
3 Sigma has the expertise and capacity to handle 100% of the development process for you, if so desired. However, if you prefer to utilize your own materials and simply have 3 Sigma provide input on optimization and manufacture your materials, we offer that service as well. Our goal is to work with you – in whatever capacity you need.
In many existing relationships, our clients are part of the manufacturing process and are onsite working with us to produce materials. We enjoy those arrangements, as it allows us to interact firsthand with the customer and their needs.
Capturing the Market
3 Sigma is investing in Value Added Toll Coating relationships in order to help partners:
- Co-develop and produce innovative products for new or existing market segments
- Reduce scale up and product commercialization time and cost
- Accelerate the capture of market opportunities
- Overcome human capital or financial constraints that could inhibit the commercialization of new products
SigmaKoat TE™ (Tamper Evident-Thermal Transfer)
Since 1980 our innovative capabilities and products have helped companies create new higher margin products for their customers while reducing waste and total applied costs. Building upon this legacy is our “highly engineered” thermal transfer SigmaKoat family of products.
SigmaKoat TE is a line of destructible films with both covert and overt features for security label applications. The custom formulated topcoat improves print quality and durability. With multiple constructions available, the product provides high levels of adhesion to many surfaces, allowing the face stock to easily delaminate to show tamper evidence.
The high tack adhesive utilized in this construction ensures that the face material will shred when the attempt is made to remove the label. This material is suited for a wide range of application substrate surfaces.
